Creating a Workable Soil Preparation

This presentation will provide a broad overview of the challenges posed by current and future soil preparations.  With various testing procedures, an exact model can be completed to determine what source of nutrients will need to be naturally regenerated into the soil.  Native planting strategies, encouraging ideas on how to mitigate issues with non-habituated zones for restoration planning will be discussed.  Strategies will include diversity in site preparation techniques with the consideration of organic mineral supplementation to the soil organics.

When faced with land areas that have been mined over a lifecycle it is important to consider the following: soil substructure and aeration. Completing a general overview and testing of a topsoil/subbase will help determine the right solution for the preparation of a site for vegetation and seedling establishment. It is essential to relook at the way the ground is prepared for native vegetation along with the concept of aeration in tandem for natural nutrient replenishment.

Incorporating the proper nutrients with the added benefit of microorganisms of different fungi will help create an environment with a solid base for foliage and vegetation. In tandem, site preparation focusing on decompacting brings soil to life by letting the soil essentially “breathe”. When we simply open the soil structure allowing proper drainage channels to occur, the surface drainage is improved with faster absorption of rain, snow, and spring melting cycles.
