Whitewood Mine Reclamation Tour presented by TransAlta and ACA

Explore the evolution of reclamation at the Whitewood Mine
- See how a formerly mined landscape is being transformed into biodiverse, self-sustaining ecosystems
- Learn how the land has been progressively restored using science-based strategies and adaptive management
- See how areas with no available topsoil were reclaimed using compost to rebuild healthy, functional soils
- Understand how ongoing monitoring and collaboration have shaped a model for future mine reclamation efforts across Alberta.
Understand the Challenges of land reclamation in real-world conditions.
- Discover how erosion issues were addressed
- Learn about integrated weed management practices that helped to reduce invasive species pressure and promote native vegetation
Dive into long-term Wildlife monitoring conducted by the Alberta Conservation Association (ACA)
- Gain insight into how reclaimed land is supporting the return of wildlife, including upland birds, small mammals and ungulates
- Explore how ACA’s research data has informed reclamation planning and improved ecological outcomes

General Information

Location: TransAlta Whitewood Mine
Length: Estimated to be 4 hours
Transportation: Bus transportation will depart from the Best Western Stony Plain. Personal vehicles are not permitted at the tour sites.
Refreshments: Bagged lunch, snacks, and refreshments will be provided.
Dress Code: No PPE required but dress appropriately and wear appropriate footwear for short walks outdoors.
Price:
- Tour Tickets: $100 for Members, $120.00 for Non-Members – Ticket includes Networking Event and Tour.
- Networking Only Tickets: $30.00 for Members, $40.00 for Non-Members.
