Presentation Summary

Located off the southeast coast of Queensland, Australia, North Stradbroke Island is the World’s second largest sand island (~27,500 ha) and the setting for wide-spread mining activity over much of the last half century due to its richness in silica and heavy mineral ores (e.g., ilmenite, rutile, and zircon). This study depicts broad-scale revegetation patterns following sand mining based on an ecological timeline spanning 4–20 years post-rehabilitation. Findings (per Audet et al. 2013) are evaluated in the context of soil disturbance and vegetation life-history strategies that, together, appear to be driving alternate ecological outcomes. This lecture summarizes the project setting, its approach to land rehabilitation and vegetation monitoring.
